As we turn to Galatians 4:21-5:1, we will read a very cryptic passage about Sarah and Hagar. Sarah was Abraham's wife, and Hagar was her servant (Genesis 16). Since she did not have any children, Sarah gave Hagar to Abraham in order for Hagar to bear her a child. Even though God had promised a son to Abraham, he and Sarah took matters into their own hands. The Apostle Paul uses this as an illustration of the freedom that comes through the promise of God and the bondage that comes through the Law.
